Dating in Asia

Asia is many clocks, languages, and cities. DateInOz is a free noticeboard operated from Malaysia, open to adults anywhere, with a focus on Asia and Oceania. These notes cover the practical parts: saying where you are, and agreeing a time that exists for both people.

Where “tonight” is

Malaysia, Singapore, Perth, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines share UTC+8. DateInOz is operated on that clock. Jakarta, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City are an hour behind it. Tokyo and Seoul are an hour ahead. Delhi is two and a half hours behind.

If you suggest a call, name the hour and the city, for example “8pm in Kuala Lumpur”. A bare “tonight” often lands on the wrong evening.

Name a city

A country is a search filter. A city is where a first meeting could happen. Kuala Lumpur, George Town, Johor Bahru, Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, and Tokyo are not the same plan, even when the flight is short. Johor Bahru and Singapore sit next to each other and are different countries, with a border between them.

If your city is not in the suggestion list, set the country and type the city name. The profile should still say which place you mean.

Language

The site interface is English. Plenty of people across Asia also write in another language at home. A line on your profile about the languages you actually want to use saves a stilted chat. Mixing languages in one message is ordinary in a lot of cities.

Meeting

Keep the early messages on DateInOz. A cafe, a mall, or another public place you can leave is a better first meeting than a home address. Tell a friend where you are going. A request for money, including tickets or gift cards, is a reason to stop and report the profile.

What this page will not pretend

There is no member count on this page. A number used as advertising would be a guess. The city directory lists places people have actually saved. Search starts at Anywhere, and you narrow it when a city matters.
